Two depth numbers get confused constantly, and the confusion costs homeowners money. Total well depth is how deep the well was drilled. Pump setting depth — sometimes called intake depth — is how far down the pump actually hangs.

A quote is shaped mainly by the second number. It drives how much drop pipe and cable are involved, how the pump is handled coming out and going back in, and how long the work takes. A well drilled deep can have a pump set much shallower.

If you can find either figure in your well records before you request quotes, do. It makes competing quotes genuinely comparable.
